ARTIST'S STATEMENT
I'm an artmaker based in Johannesburg.
My art practice comprises mainly printmaking, composing thematic series of small-scale works, as well as drawing in various media and creating artist's books. I have a fascination with the narrative that develops within a series and often have a few bodies of work on the go, each one feeding into the others, triggering further ideas. Some lay 'in waiting' for several years before I pick them up again, such as my stone works.
I prefer to work quietly alone, listening to classical music or audible books. For me, reading poetry brings the world into perspective and sometimes provides me with metaphors for subject matter or titles for artworks.
For many years, my work dealt with different aspects of human relationships, though my recent work comments more on humankind’s relationship with the planet - on which we exist but continue to abuse - including nostalgia for certain places. Much of my imagery arises from natural objects such as plants and stones, or from specific aspects of my life experiences.
