The press.on start-up story: 2022



Johann Booyens and Mandy Conidaris are South African artists. Johann (from the Western Cape) has been living in Glasgow, Scotland since 2020, and Mandy at the time was living in Addlestone in Surrey, England - she relocated back to Johannesburg in 2024.

In SA we had heard of each other via mutual artist friends and printmaking shows. While living in the Cape, Johann had started a small group called Drukbesig (Print-ready) comprising himself and four other artists from the Cape who would print at his studio.

So, when Mandy visited Edinburgh in November 2022 we met up to exchange ideas, initially around how to build a presence of South African artist/printmakers in the UK. 

After a 5-hour conversation in a little coffee shop on The Royal Mile, we decided to start up an initiative we called press.on Print Club. Our early aim was to promote the work of the original Drukbesig group within the UK and SA markets.

After growing the group's membership and experiencing a few hiccups, in 2025 we decided to shrink the group again to Johann's original Drukbesig members, and retitle it press.on creative collaborators, deciding to extend our oeuvre to include any 2-dimensional works - not only print, but also painting, collage, frottage, or any other mediums the artists wanted to present.
